Rep. Manweller issues statement on today's state Supreme Court ruling
Rep. Matt Manweller, R-Ellensburg, and ranking Republican on the House Labor and Workforce Development Committee issued the following statement today regarding the state Supreme Court's ruling on taxpayer protections: “I am deeply disappointed the Washington State Supreme Court has thrown out the two-thirds requirement to raise taxes. The people of Washington have repeatedly voted to enact this policy. With five separate initiatives, the people of Washington have made it clear that they want bipartisan supermajorities before their Legislature raises taxes. “Today, a seemingly arrogant Supreme Court has ignored the will of the people and a long-standing legal tradition. It is now up to the Legislature and the people to enact a constitutional amendment reinstating the two-thirds majority rule and thwart this unfortunate legal decision. Without such an amendment, a Seattle-dominated Legislature will be able to raise taxes with impunity.” To read more about House Republicans' proposal to put the two-thirds requirement in the House rules, visit: houserepublicans.wa.gov/news/legislature/amending-rules-for-the-people.
