SUGGESTED LEAD: A bill designed to prevent school shootings and stop violence before it happens in the classrooms is under consideration in the state House Education Committee. John Sattgast reports.
SATTGAST: House Bill 1310 is modeled after the national “Safe 2 Tell” program. Thirteenth District State Representative Matt Manweller sponsored the measure.
MANWELLER: “What if we came up with an anonymous way where a kid could say, ‘Johnny just posted some really scary stuff on Facebook at 8 o’clock at night that – ‘I’m going to get you’ – or whatever. If there was a way for me to let the principal or a local officer know so that there was somebody to meet Johnny at the door at 8 o’clock.”
SATTGAST: The Ellensburg Republican says the bill sets up an anonymous reporting system that focuses on prevention so that officials can act before a threat becomes real.
